SouthShore Tampa Bay Fishing Forecast
May 2010
May is here and spring is just about gone and Summer is here. Still, the big question is what about Snook. Well, by mid May the snook should be on there way to spawn. I will speculate that the winter of 2010 will be remembered by fishermen on the Southshore of Tampa Bay as one of the coldest on record. With the snook taking the hardest hit. I will try not to target snook this season unless I see big numbers of them in the normal spots. If I do catch snook I will pay particular attention in the handeling and releasing of this prize catch. I think and hope we and the snook will be fine.
Trout will be up on the flats and I expect the bite to be off the wall as it has been in April. I would look for grass beds in the 3 foot ranges. The Southshore flats should hold a few schools of Redfish but only if we stop buzzing the flats just to get to another spot. If you can, please run off the flats so that we can get the redfish schooled up. Look for the reds in the schools of mullet that roam the area.
The other big question this year is White bait. We will just have to wait and see. Look for the big bait pods to arrive in late April and may with Mackerel, Tarpon and Kings will not far behind.
This time of year I like to mix it up by targeting Redfish and Trout on the flats and Spanish Mackerel in open Bay waters. White bait will be my bait of choice.
